What Inspired ‘Toxic Lovers’

A woman with styled hair and tattoos on her arm, wearing a sleeveless top and jewelry, is sitting in a dimly lit room with red lighting, gesturing with her hand while talking. She is in front of a large window overlooking a city at night.

I wrote this right after ending a toxic relationship with someone I cared about deeply—but for all the wrong reasons. We spent nearly a year fueling each other’s broken pieces, and as unhealthy as it was, it felt good… like an escape. A remedy. But it wasn’t good for me—or for them. Eventually, things went too far, and we had no choice but to stop.

When I sat with everything that happened, I started writing from both perspectives—mine and the lover’s. I wanted to capture how it felt on both sides of a situationship spiraling out of control. At the time, it was probably directed at them… and a few of my past toxic loves, too. But looking back now, I realize I was writing it for me.
